Crocheted crocodile on display at SS Great Britain

By Bristol24/7  Monday Oct 23, 2017

It caught the imagination of the Bristol public when it was first spotted in the River Avon in 2014, with further sightings of a crocodile in the Floating Harbour by those who wanted to believe the tale.

This half-term, a life-size woolly version of the reptile made up of hundreds of crochet motifs goes on show at the SS Great Britain.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The creature has been created by Vicky Harrison and some of the volunteers from Crafting the City who also created Briswool, the woolly version of Bristol featuring many of the city’s most well-known landmarks.

One of these landmarks was the Underfall Yard, with the crocodile itself taking inspiration from the industrial past of the dockside, in particular the Underfall Yard’s pumphouse floor.

The Bristol Crocodile is on display in the Great Eastern Hall next to the SS Great Britain from October 23-29. Entry is free and there will be a number of activities for children.

One of Crafting the City’s next projects is turning this buoy in front of the Great Western Hall into a giant wooly bauble in time for Christmas
