A man has been arrested after a car flipped on to its roof on Monday morning in a crash with a lorry.

The motorist also hit a lamppost and concrete bollards in the incident on Gloucester Road.

Officers have now arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of dangerous driving while under the influence of drink and drugs. The driver was taken hospital to receive treatment after the arrest.

The collision took place on the A38 and saw a large stretch of the road from Horfield Church to The Royal Oak pub closed off for around an hour.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “At around 5.30am this morning officers were called to a road traffic collision on Gloucester Road, Bristol.

“A car had hit a number of concrete bollards and a lamppost before colliding with a lorry parked on the roadside, causing significant damage to its cab.

“A wheel of the car came off during the incident and struck a window of a nearby bar, causing it to smash.

“The road was closed while the car, which ended up on its roof following the incident, was recovered.

“The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drink and drugs.

“He was then taken to hospital where he continues to receive treatment.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam or CCTV of it, is asked to phone 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5222273801.
