Bristol cashes in on fund for greener buses
Bristol City Council has been given a share of nearly half a million pounds to re-fit buses with low carbon technology.
The money will be spent on upgrading 42 buses – 31 based at Bristol depots and 11 based in Bath – to make them more fuel efficient, and reduce both the carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions produced.
The joint bid from Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset councils secured £378,000 of funding from the Department of Transport, with £84,000 from First Group in match-funding.
The cash will be spent on technology to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and harness energy lost through braking, making buses cleaner and more efficient.
Bristol mayor George Ferguson said the funding would “provide a further boost to the city’s green credentials” as the city gears up to be European Green Capital 2015.
“Keeping Bristol moving with high quality, affordable public transport and cleaner air for all has always been one of my top priorities,” he said.
