1% of Britons think Bristol should be Britain’s second city
An ancient debate has been settled once and for all: what is the UK’s second city?
And the answer is not Bristol, despite one per cent of Britons (mostly from Bristol and environs) thinking that our city deserves that unofficial accolade.
Manchester is the most likely holder of the title according to the results of a new YouGov study, with 66 per cent of Britons believing Manchester has a strong case for being considered Britain’s second city, compared to 48 per cent for Birmingham and 49 per cent for Edinburgh
When picking the city they most consider to be Britain’s second city, 34 per cent say Manchester and 30 per cent opt for Birmingham.
And what about Bristol? In medieval times, Bristol was behind only London and perhaps also York in wealth and influence.
But our standing has somewhat slipped over the last 500 or so years.
We do still have supporters, with ten to 12 per cent of people not only in Bristol but also Gloucestershire and Wiltshire considering Bristol as Britain’s second city.
And a whopping 28 per cent of South West residents feel Bristol has a reasonable case to stand second on the metaphorical podium.
In total, one per cent of respondents to the YouGov study see Bristol as our nation’s second city; the gleaming artwork on the floor of the Centre a shining example of our city’s prowess, pride and ability to get things done.
