Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2021, day 9: The Ardagh Community Trust

By Ellie Pipe  Wednesday Dec 8, 2021

A once-derelict area on Horfield Common has been transformed into a vibrant community space and gardens thanks to the work of a local collective.

Ardagh Community Trust (ACT) was established in 2017 in response to the need for a hub that could provide facilities for recreation and wellbeing for people of all ages in and around the neighbourhood.

The charity and social enterprise is led by residents of Horfield, who secured a community asset transfer lease for the Ardagh site in July 2019.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The trust is also working with Bristol City Council and local groups and organisations to develop and fund a plan to bring all of the tennis courts at the Ardagh back into full use for the benefit of people across the city. In the meantime, the courts are maintained by volunteers who have implemented a new booking system for five of the courts for ACT members in line with demand and Covid safety advice.

Speaking about work at the Ardagh, Sally, of ACT, says: “The former derelict site has been transformed to house, among other things, the Cafe on the Common where local people can meet and get involved in projects and events supporting the needs of the community.

“Opportunities such as play sessions, gardening, sport, and arts and crafts make up some of the range of activities available at The Ardagh. ACT also encourages partnerships including Food For All, Friends Ageing Better, Scouts and Playful Bristol to help support improved outcomes for the local area.”
