Pub of the Week: The Vittoria

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 3, 2019

If there was a prize for the Bristol pub with the most eclectic framed pictures on its walls, the Vittoria on Whiteladies Road would win hands-down.

There’s a photograph of Princess Diana inspecting land mines. There’s a poster for the film Slumdog Millionaire. There’s a logo for Big Brother on Channel 4. Gold star for anyone who can find the link between those three.

As Reef’s Put Your Hands Up came on the stereo on a recent Friday evening, a white-haired man in a tweed coat perused the property pages of a glossy Bristol magazine at one side of the bar.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

On the other side of the bar, a regular was served his usual pint of Butcombe, with the other ales here Bob from Wickwar and Tribute from St Austell, with a good choice of gins and whiskies.

Chris & Jo’s Kitchen on St Michael’s Hill began as a pop-up at this pub known by regulars as the Vitt. More than a century old, it hosts a weekly quiz on a Wednesday night and serves roasts on Sundays from midday.

“It’s a lovely pub isn’t it,” a bald 40-something man commented to his group of friends as they prepared to leave. And again for emphasis: “It’s a lovely pub.”
