A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Masonic, Bedminster
The full-throated singing of a few regulars echoed through the Masonic as they belted out the lyrics of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother by The Hollies, playing on the speakers.
But the music and singing played only a small part in making this pub on North Street seem as riveting on a Wednesday evening.
Huddled in a snug, an elderly couple nodded and sang along while their fellow regulars sat on the bar chatting and singing, with one of them breaking into an occasional solo act.

The regular vistiors to the Masonic huddled aroung the pub’s L-shaped bar singing, laughing and enjoying their tipples
Owned and managed the Wickwar Wessex group, the pub is a certified locals’ pub and also possibly a promising contender for Bristol’s cheapest pints.
Two non-regular punters sat on a corner table with their half pints, soaking in the boozer’s surroundings: tables scattered around the L-shaped bar, a few television screens playing news and sports, and a sign for the ladies’ toilets leading to a room with a pool table, a skittle alley and a dart board.
Brews from Amstel Bier, Fosters, Murphy’s and Thatchers were some of the offerings on tap, with other canned and bottled options cooling away in the bar’s refrigerator.
The Red Dragon and St George’s were two of the many flags billowing as they hung from the pub’s ceiling.
Sports fillers played on television screens in the background, as the non-regulars scanned through the many football memorabilia adorned on the pub’s walls.
A conversation about books was broken up by a drinker’s loud vocalising of Carrie Anne another track by the 60s/70s rock band, The Hollies
The early sunset crept in quicker than usual, with any sign of daylight gone by the time the punters had finished their half pints.
As they stood outside saying their goodbyes, the non-regulars could still hear music, laughter and cheers from inside the beloved neighbourhood pub.

The Masonic is one of the many popular haunts on the bustling street in south Bristol
