New Mexican restaurant and bar to open on Stokes Croft
Corner 77 on Stokes Croft is set to be transformed this year by the experienced team behind some of Bristol’s most popular eating and drinking spots.
Masa & Mezcal will be a new restaurant and bar due to open in the spring promising to offer “fresh, innovative and artisanal” Mexican food and drink.
The menu will be a collaboration between Imogen and Kieran Waite – whose other businesses include Bravas on Cotham Hill, and Gambas and Cargo Cantina in Wapping Wharf – and Mexican-born Carlos Rivas who is currently head chef at Bravas on Cotham Hill.
In 2018, Imogen and Kieran and some of their team underwent an intensive training programme at Maizajo, reputed to be the best tortilla maker in Mexico City, learning the process of grinding corn and making ‘masa’, the corn-based dough from which tortillas are made.

“We’ve always had a vision to bring a wider range of authentic Mexican food to Bristol after many trips around Mexico,” Imogen said.
“After a great year of food, drink and music at Corner 77 we’re really excited to be transforming the space into Masa & Mezcal.”
Food will include tacos made with masa dough stone-ground on the premises, as well as West Country produce and carefully-sourced Mexican ingredients.
The clue to the main focus of the drinks menu is in the name, with mezcal – like tequila made with agave but distilled differently and made in different areas of Mexico – available straight up, in flights or as the staple ingredient of the cocktail menu.
Masa & Mezcal’s bar shelves will climb to the ceiling and be back lit to display their bottles of mezcal, which will be chosen by bar staff with the help of a roller ladder.
