New Indian restaurant opens on Cotham Hill

By Mia Vines Booth and Jujhar Kaur  Wednesday Nov 29, 2023

A new Indian restaurant has opened on Cotham Hill, promising to take diners on “a majestic journey across the majestic subcontinent.”

Black Cumin has replaced Greek restaurant and bar, Elia, and is headed up by owners Ashwani Rana, Tanuinder Singh and Umakant Sharma.

Arvind Pawar, who moved from India in 2008 and previously worked as a head chef at Nutmeg in Clifton, will lead the kitchen.

Speaking about the move to Cotham Hill, Ashwani said: “We saw this is becoming a food street now, more restaurants coming up, so it’s getting busier now.”

“So we’ve got some Kashmeri delicacies and Delhi specialities, and we’ve got food from down south like coconut based curries.”

“We haven’t done any promotions, no marketing, we haven’t even got our website ready yet, so we are just relying on the walk-ins. We are hoping this week is going to be more busy than last week,” he added.

“We are quite excited because we have never worked as owners, we have always worked in the shadows so we are quite excited, we want to give 100 per cent.”
