New bar opening soon on Gloucester Road

By Martin Booth  Sunday Aug 2, 2020

A new bar is being opened soon on Gloucester Road from a business based only a few hundred metres away.

The former Alchemy 198 is set to become the new home for Bottles & Books, whose original shop is also due to reopen but not currently for drinking in.

Alchemy 198 – previously Venus – has two floors and a large outside terrace, and was owned by Sarah Thorp of nearby shop and gallery Room 212.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Its new incarnation is set to open from the start of September as a full late night-bar, “so no more closing at 9pm just as we’re getting started!” the Bottles & Books team said.

Writing on their social media accounts, Bottles & Books said: “The bar will obviously have an amazing tap list with the best local, national and international craft beer, an amazing bottle/can fridge, but it won’t be just craft beer, we’ll have cocktails, awesome spirits, wines, ciders etc so you’ll have somewhere to bring your friends not into beer that will keep you both happy.

“As we get back to normal and restrictions go away we will have events including live music, comedy, film nights, pub quizzes and with two floors there’s space for private parties and events.”
