Farro named as one of the best places for baked goods in the UK

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 13, 2023

Activist, presenter and author Ravneet Gill has named a Bristol bakery among her favourite places in the UK for baked goods.

The author of The Pastry Chef’s Guide and judge on Junior Bake Off praises Farro in St Paul’s – in particular for their custard tarts and soft serve ice cream.

Gill was talking to Conde Nast Traveller in their ‘where chefs eat’ series of interviews.

“This is a tiny place and you could easily walk past it and not think anything of it,” said Gill of Farro, revealing that it was her Bristol-based friend Elly Pear who introduced her to the bakery – whose official address is Brunswick Square but which faces onto New Bond Street opposite Fabric Land.

“Honestly, they have the best Portuguese custard tarts in the country. They are so hard to make, so I’m amazed by anyone that can make them well.”

She added: “Bristol is full of serious foodies and it’s very well-loved by locals but you’ll get those in the know flocking here for the baked goods, too

“I love their homemade soft serve and I think they do it all year round, but the summer is obviously a lovely time to go and try it. Otherwise, I would recommend going for an afternoon slice of cake any time of the year.

“The soft serve they make is also the best I’ve ever had. They put in what seems like a biscuit, but it’s actually a dehydrated piece of pain au chocolat. And it’s covered in honey so it’s this crunchy honey, pain au chocolat – stuck inside soft serve.”
