Cheese-themed restaurant to open in converted maternity hospital

By Meg Houghton-Gilmour  Thursday Sep 15, 2022

One of the last places you’d expect to find a new restaurant is in a converted maternity hospital.

But owner and front of house manager-to-be Joshua Doyle believes that the unique location of The Cheese Platter could be the foundation of its success.

Built in 1886, Queen Victoria House was originally a private school for boys.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Over the years it has also been home to a maternity hospital, offices and now The Vincent – a collection of later-living apartments of which The Cheese Platter will be the resident restaurant.

Due to open in October, brunch, lunch and dinner will be served to the public as well as residents of The Vincent and will overlook the expansive grounds.

Joshua believes the concept of The Cheese Platter is unique, with all dishes incorporating cheese in some way and  diners be able to choose which cheese they wish their meal to be cooked with.

The sample menu features grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni cheese, omelettes and burgers.

Josh was inspired by his love of four cheese pizzas, and visits to The Cheese Barge in London and Domaine 16 in Cheltenham.

He plans to pair the dishes with locally sourced drinks, including Dunleavy wines and Twisted Oak beer.
