DJ Derek to be remembered through tribute gig

By Adele Momoko Fraser  Monday Jun 13, 2016

DJ Derek will be remembered through a DJ set comprised of tracks from his legendary record collection at next month’s Larmer Tree Festival.

Count Skylarkin – who played at Derek’s funeral in April – will be playing a show entitled Sweet Memory Sounds in tribute to his close friend.

Festival organisers say that having played the festival many times throughout its 26-year history, DJ Derek had become a Larmer Tree institution.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Count Skylarkin has spent the past few months browsing through Derek’s collection of reggae, ska, soul, rhythm & blues and calypso records, and will be dipping into the collection to close this year’s festival, just as Derek did on many occasions.

Skylarkin said: “He was the antidote to an industry that strives to take itself too seriously – simple, straightforward, playing the music he loved, giving the people what they want to hear. An old-fashioned gentleman, with a streak of mischief.”

The artist will also be playing a tribute set in the Shangri-La area at this month’s Glastonbury Festival.
