Bristol radio station release compilation album raising money for NHS charity

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Apr 23, 2020

A worldwide music broadcaster sharing music from Bristol and around the world, 1020 Radio has been nurturing Bristol’s music culture since 2015.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the digital radio platform is releasing a compilation series, 1020 Curated.

The compilation album will release on Friday, April 24, and all proceeds will go to Above & Beyond, a Bristol charity supporting frontline NHS staff and volunteers.

Above & Beyond itself has launched a coronavirus appeal to “support our hospitals in any way they need” during the pandemic.

This appeal, and money donated from the 1020 Curated, will be used by the hospitals where the need is greatest during the response to Covid-19, with the immediate focus being support for the physical and emotional wellbeing of frontline staff in Bristol.

This will include buying toiletries, providing drinks and snacks, and giving store cards to allow staff to make urgent purchases.

The first edition of the charity series, as 1020 Radio plans on making more complications, has been curated by unperson.

“Championing creativity, diversity and community has been the driving force of all our projects,” say the team at 1020 Radio. “We’re excited to bring this to a new medium in the form of our; a showcase and celebration of the street-level sounds of which 1020 is built on.”

The compilation features 25 original compositions from local artists and associates of the radio station, covering a huge range of electronic music styles ingrained in the city’s culture.

“The heritage of Bristol’s lauded soundsystem culture provides the foundation for new structures of dubwise rave architecture, whilst exploring abstract sonic territories and monolithic soundscapes,” say the 1020 team.

The album will be available on Bandcamp on Friday April 24 and the first 25 copies will come with a premium 350gsm print designed by Montag Freedoms.
