Breakfast Records celebrate ten years with ‘variety pack’ release
Indie label Breakfast Records have celebrated their ten year milestone with a remarkable compilation featuring friends and artists covering songs written by their label mates.
The record label has grown from humble origins to achieving international recognition with bands like Getdown Services, while retaining the DIY ethos central to its early shows in “pubs and pizza joints” and first releases of handmade vinyl and cassettes.
The pair behind the label, Langkamer members Josh Jarman and Dan Anthony, focus on Bristol talent which in recent years has included signing Mumble Tide, the Cindys and folk-jazz hybrid Zach Thompson.
For the compilation, Are We Having Fun? which has been pressed on to a delightful fried egg vinyl, the artists have chosen their favourite tracks from the label’s back catalogue to put their own spin on.

Alt-pop duo Mumble Tide cover Gallows Acre by Classic Trucks, and Emily Breeze plays their track Something To You.
Getdown Services have chosen Jenny by Langkamer while the art-rock pair’s songs Every Day is Fun Day and I Wish it Didn’t Bother Me are given a fresh take by Eva Penney with Katy J Pearson guitarist Benjamin Spike Saunders and Polhawan respectively.
Other bands that appear include the Cindys, SLONK, Zach Thompson, jasmine4.t and the Golden Dregs.
“Throughout our ten years as a label we’ve been propped up along the way by so many amazing people, and we wanted to create a compilation that felt like a tribute to that,” said Jarman.
“Music can embody so many ideas – the goal here was to make something that felt like a celebration of community, creativity and cohesion.”
Their success is measured not only in their steadfast artistic integrity and the rise of Breakfast artists like Getdown Services, but in the financial sustainability of the independent operation which too often in the music industry falls into the category of ‘passion project’.
The label presents the seventh edition of its annual day-festival, Break-fest, at Strange Brew in September.
They pride themselves on showcasing emerging acts with potential, making the event a day of discovery for music fans, with previous lineups including Melin Melyn, Los Bitchos and Lambrini Girls.
This year the bill features Cornwall’s psych-folk experience Blind Yeo, the Family Matters, the None, Ohtis, Sidney Jones & the Murmurations and the label’s own Polhawan’s blend of slacker folk-rock.
