Tully
Charlize Theron stars in a sharply written comedy-drama about a mother ground down by parenthood
We’re well into blockbuster season now, with a new cinematic juggernaut rolling into town every couple of weeks to swallow up all the available screens. Next up is Deadpool 2 (May 15), followed by Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 24).
That leaves everything else to scrabble around in the margins in search of punters who are either fed up with blockbusters or aren’t interested. It’s often a good time for comedy to flourish, especially those films pitched at a predominantly female audience. Remember how well Bridesmaids did back in 2011, taking the industry by surprise? This year’s first contender is I Feel Pretty, starring Amy Schumer. Smaller releases vying for your attention include the well-received Tully, superb Japanese animation Mary and the Witch’s Flower and, for old lefties, The Young Karl Marx.
If you’re suffering from Glastonbury Festival withdrawal, the Lost in Vagueness documentary pitches up at the Everyman. Other event cinema releases range from uplifting doc Skid Row Marathon to the NT’s Macbeth.
Should it piss with rain over the bank holiday weekend and you’re stuck with nippers to entertain, many cinemas have previews of Sherlock Gnomes from Saturday to Monday (for a classier alternative, the Cineworld is reviving Disney’s 1950 Cinderella). Thursday also brings previews of this year’s Melissa McCarthy comedy, Life of the Party.
