Life of the Party

Director
Ben Falcone
Certificate
12A
Running Time
105 mins

Husband and wife team Ben Falcone (director) and Melissa McCarthy (star) team up for a third time after Tammy and The Boss for an Old School/Back to School-style campus comedy. You can probably guess exactly where this is going – and predict all the gags – from the synopsis.

McCarthy plays middle-aged housewife Deanne, who’s dumped by her hubby. This prompts her to go back to college, where she reinvents herself as ‘Dee Rock’ and indulges enthusiastically in all the hedonistic pleasures campus life has to offer. Naturally, her daughter (Molly Gordon), who’s on the same course at the same college, is horrified. We’re presumably intended to buy this as an uplifting female empowerment yarn rather than another film about a fat woman who falls over a lot.
