I Feel Pretty

Whoops! This new Amy Schumer comedy promised to be properly zeitgeisty, with a female co-director and co-writer and a modish, inclusive ‘body positive’ message. But you do this stuff at your peril in the Twitterstorm era, when legions of permanently furious keyboard warriors are itching to take offence – especially if you have the misfortune to be a conventionally attractive, able-bodied, ‘cisgender’ woman. So even before anyone saw it, the backlash commenced on the basis of the trailer alone, which has been accused of ‘fat-shaming’, among other modern crimes.

The plot? Trainwreck star Schumer plays insecure Renee Barrett, who struggles with feelings of inadequacy. But after receiving a bash on the head, she awakes believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman in the world.
