How to Talk to Girls at Parties

Director
John Cameron Mitchell
Certificate

Running Time
103 mins

The title might suggest yet another landfill romcom, but this is actually a genre-defying adaptation of a Neil Gaiman short story. It’s directed by John Cameron Mitchell, who gave us that hugely enjoyable artporn outrage Shortbus. None of which means it’s necessarily any cop.

A period yarn set in the oh-so-punk Croydon (actually Sheffield, fact fans) of 1977, it’s the story of an authentically pogoing expectorator (Alex Sharp) who falls for a girl (Elle Fanning) who’s actually a space alien on a dastardly mission. Cue: punks vs aliens showdown. Sounds like fun, huh? Alas, most critics slated the film when it was unveiled at Cannes last year, describing it as scrappy, annoying, one-note and insubstantial (perfectly punk, in other words), with Variety‘s reviewer damning the film as the biggest dud of the festival.
