Mr. Freedom

Director
William Klein
Certificate
18
Running Time
95 mins

These days we’re awash with superheroes, but back in 1968 ex-pat American William Klein gave the world a costumed avenger who makes Captain America seem like a woolly liberal. Mr. Freedom (John Abbey) is a commie-hating good ol’ boy determined to trounce anyone who opposes American imperialism. To this end, he jets off to France to take on those evil lefty freethinkers.

The Hellfire Video Club’s May choice is a feast of kitschy fun that remains alarmingly relevant today. Alas, history records that when the film came out some humourless lefties objected to its caricatures. Watch out for the cameos by Donald Pleasence, Serge Gainsbourg and Phillipe Noiret.
