Yep, it’s The Monkees’ legendary, acid-fried commercial suicide movie from 1968, co-written by Jack Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson.
The Monkees? Here’s a primer for the uninitiated: when NBC decided to launch a wacky TV show to cash in on Beatlemania, they cast a quartet of nobodies as their fictional pop group, with veteran music supervisor Don Kirshner on board to ensure monkeying around stayed within acceptable limits. But as the ’60s began to swing, the Monkees rebelled. After their TV show was cancelled, Rafelson’s bizarre Head found them a cult audience of, well, heads. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, this is a film that could only have happened in the 1960s.
