Jeune Femme
An impulsive young woman is adrift in Paris in this award-winning character study
It’s wall-to-wall Deadpool 2 at every mainstream cinema this week as Fox desperately tries to haul in as much loot as humanly possible during the film’s nine days on release before the next Star Wars juggernaut rolls into town. That’s right: while Avengers: Infinity War had a relatively leisurely three weeks to become the all-time highest-grossing superhero movie at the UK box office, wisecracking Deady has just a small window of opportunity to make hay before the fickle nerd community all slope off in the direction of Solo: A Star Wars Story. This opens on Thursday, in 2D and 3D, with many cinemas taking the opportunity sate the most eager by unveiling it at one minute past midnight. With Avengers: Infinity War still doing a roaring trade and Black Panther clinging on, there’s little reason to frequent a multiplex cinema after Wednesday unless you’re a fan of superheroes and/or Star Wars.
If none of the foregoing floats your boat, there’s still plenty of alternative stuff out there. The Watershed has Jeune Femme and a preview of On Chesil Beach with a producer Q&A. If you missed Beast the first time round, you’ll be delighted to find that the Everyman is bringing it back. There’s plenty of event cinema too, ranging from Austin Powers with a live orchestra at the Colston Hall to the Watershed’s brace of films screened under the Grief, Death and Love banner.
