A woman (Vasilina Makovtseva) who lives alone on the outskirts of a village in Russia receives a parcel she sent to her incarcerated husband, marked ‘return to sender’. Shocked, confused and determined to get a explanation, she travels to the remote prison where he’s held.
Russian writer/director Sergei Loznitsa’s Palme d’Or nominated Kafkaesque realist drama takes its title from a 19th century Dostoevsky short story but is very much an indictment of his bleak modern homeland. It’s not an easy watch, and you may wish to know that the 18 certificate was earned by a prolonged gang rape.
