Pleasingly nasty and very bloody indeed, French first-time director Coralie Fargeat‘s accomplished rape revenge flick deploys the ‘feminist’ fig-leaf that’s been a familiar feature of exploitation cinema.
It’s the story of Jen (Matilda Lutz), who pitches up at her married boyfriend’s secluded villa by helicopter for a weekend of sex and general debauchery. Alas, this is interrupted by the arrival of two of his hunting buddies. After spending the evening boozing and frugging, they gang rape her and leave her for dead. Gore-drenched Ms. 45-style retribution ensues. You can agonise over this one’s feminist credentials or simply enjoy it as a slick and classy entry in the modern French extreme horror cycle alongside Inside, Martyrs, High Tension and Raw.
