Maxine Peake gets a great role as a female comedian struggling to make her mark in the nasty, grim-oop-north working men’s clubs of the 1970s and 1980s, where punters demand racist, sexist and homophobic material to make them larf. Known only by her stage name Funny Cow, she achieves success, if not much in the way of happiness, by using her life experiences to fuel her stand-up comedy.

The supporting cast includes Stephen Graham as her abusive dad, Emmerdale’s Tony Pitts (who also wrote the screenplay) as her abusive hubby and Paddy Considine as her nice middle class lover.
