The imaginatively titled second Star Wars anthology flick after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which took more than $1 billion worldwide back in 2016. You don’t need a masters in Nerdology to deduce that this self-styled ‘space western’ is a Han Solo origin story.
Alden Ehrenreich is cast in the role that Harrison Ford made his own and the focus is on Solo’s early adventures with his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca, with Woody Harrelson as the sarcastic young smuggler’s mentor, Tobias Beckett. But much of the drama seems to have taken place offscreen. Original co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (of Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street fame) were reportedly fired as a result of our old friend ‘creative differences’ three quarters of the way through principal photography. Safe pair of hands Ron Howard was then hired to guide the film to completion. It was also reported that Lucasfilm had hired an acting coach for Ehrenreich, who made his name with his performance in the Coens’ Hail, Caesar!, because they were unhappy with his performance in early rushes.
