Downsizing
Matt Damon is shrunk to save the planet in Alexander Payne's Lilliputian satire
OK, so it’s grim and horrible outside, but Bristol’s cinemas are about to be filled with the sound of laughter. Opening this week is Nick Park’s eight-years-in-the-making prehistoric romp Early Man. See our feature and review for more on this. As if that wasn’t guffaw-inducing enough, the Slapstick Festival takes over four major venues for three days of mirth this weekend. Be warned that there are few tickets left for many of these events, so grab ’em while you can.
If you prefer something completely different, lauded Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev pitches up at the Watershed for a Q&A after a preview of his powerful new film, Loveless. Like its predecessor, Leviathan, this one has just been nominated for a Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film Category. It’s up against some stiff competition, but don’t be surprised if Zvyagintsev walks away with the gong this time. See our full review for more on this one. Incidentally, if you’re eager to book tickets for Oscar frontrunner The Shape of Water, scroll down for our listing. This has all the screenings announced so far. As usual, check out our comprehensive film listings for everything that’s showing round these parts.
