In Bruges, The Guard and Seven Psychopaths director Martin McDonagh‘s latest black comedy has been widely acclaimed as his best film to date. But there was certainly plenty of potential for it all to go horribly wrong if he’d failed to get the tone right, or the performances were less than stellar.
Frances McDormand is on outstanding form as bereaved single mother Mildred Hayes, whose teenage daughter was raped and murdered seven months ago. Frustrated at the lack of any progress in solving the case, she rents three billboards, which she uses to shame local police chief Bill Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) for his failure to collar the culprit. But her actions outrage the local community, in which the chief is a well-respected figure. Brutally violent, splendidly profane, rib-ticklingly funny and yet fundamentally compassionate, Three Billboards… received universal critical acclaim when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
