The Vanishing

Running Time
106 mins

A Dutch/French co-production made back in 1988, which never got much of a UK release (even the Watershed didn’t show it back in the day) but acquired a well-deserved cult reputation. A young Dutch couple, Rex and Saskia, are on a cycling holiday in France. Saskia goes off to get some drinks when they stop at a service station and this is the last rex sees of her. Over the next three years, his obsession with trying to find out what happened to her puts  a strain on his current relationship until his girlfriend leaves him. Then he’s approached by a Frenchman, Raymond, who claims to be the kidnapper…

It’s a genuinely chilling and ingeniously constructed thriller, with Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu making a most convincing psycho as Raymond.
