French indie director Philippe Garrel is on very familiar territory with this third part of a low-budget monochrome trilogy that began with Jealousy and In the Shadow of Women.
Keeping it in the family, he casts his daughter Esther as twentysomething Jeanne, who pitches up on her philosophy teacher father’s (Eric Caravaca) doorstep after fleeing a disastrous relationship. Being French and, you know, a philosophy teacher and all, he’s taken up with one of his pretty students, Ariane (Louise Chevillote), who’s much the same age as Jeanne. After an awkward start, the two women bond over discussions of romantic fidelity.
