Curious, is it not, how elderly musicians are venerated in world music but ridiculed in rock? (Join me, if you will, in playing Rolling Stones Bingo, scoring a point each time a lazy hack tots up their collective age or makes a ‘novel’ moss-gathering reference.) Anyhoo, Wim Wenders’ hit 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club made a bunch of aging Cuban musos big stars on the world music circuit.
Seventeen years on, Lucy Walker caught up with the Clubbers. Many of them have, alas, carked it, while others are on their last legs. The occasion is the act’s farewell tour, which concludes in their home city of Havana. Profits from the Curzon’s screening go to the Cuba Hurricane Appeal.
