Locally made ultra-low-budget remake of The Lost Boys screens at the Cube

By Robin Askew  Wednesday Oct 30, 2024

Back in 1987, an absolute classic of the vampire genre was released. So too was Joel Schumacher’s rather cruddy The Lost Boys. But mysteriously it was the latter that captured the public imagination, leaving Kathryn Bigelow’s magnificent vampire western Near Dark to find a cult audience.

Still, at least the endlessly revived teensploitation of The Lost Boys has inspired a bunch of Bristol filmmakers to attempt a cheap’n’cheerful shot-for-shot remake.

Entitled Lostferatu, this was filmed in such glamorous locations as 20th Century Flicks, The Cube, Stokes Croft, Excelsior Comic shop, The Harbourside, Ashton Court, Leigh Woods and the filmmakers’ homes and gardens.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Around 50 actors/artists were involved, and the film was made using puppetry, AI animation, comics, and quite a bit of cardboard, with scenes from other movies chopped in.

Lostferatu enjoyed a sell-out premiere at the Cube cinema last Halloween and now returns, with more scenes added, for a two-night-stand at the same venue on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 November. All profits go to the Cube to pay for their recent toilet refurbishment.  Go here for tickets.
