Cinema Rediscovered records huge audience boost

By Robin Askew  Monday Oct 7, 2024

One of the golden rules of festival PR is to assert that each year’s event is bigger and better than its predecessor. Only occasionally is any actual research conducted to support such claims.

Cinema Rediscovered, Bristol’s annual celebration of great archive films, is an exception. CR recently published a report on its eighth annual edition, which ran from July 24-28 at multiple venues including the Watershed, Cube, Bristol Megascreen, Curzon Cinema and 20th Century Flicks. A total of 59 events took place, with 15 UK premieres of new restorations and 68 guest speakers. Nineteen of these events sold out completely, with many more reaching near capacity. Total ticket sales were 4,811 – a 21% increase on 2023. Audience research revealed that 56% of attendees were first-time visitors to the festival and that 99% of those surveyed described their experience as good or very good. Elements of the programme, including John Sayles’ Lone Star, James Earl Jones in The Annihilation of Fish and El Cine Soy Yo from Venezuela, have also toured to 33 other venues/ festivals so far, with the tour continuing.

It’s just been confirmed that the ninth edition of Cinema Rediscovered will run from Wed 23- Sun 27 July 2025. We’ll have programme details as soon as they’re made available.
