Best of Bristol 2019: Film

By Robin Askew  Saturday Nov 30, 2019

These are Bristol24/7’s favourite films of 2019:

1. The Irishman

Who’d have predicted that Scorsese would have something new to say in the mobster genre? His powerful, elegiac epic also cemented Netflix’s status as a major player in film production.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Also on top of his game this year was Quentin Tarantino with his fabulous love letter to sixties LA. Inevitably, this proved controversial, but it just wouldn’t be QT without controversy.

3. Bait

Easily holding its own against any major studio release, Mark Jenkin’s strikingly original, low-budget, Bristol-produced (by Totterdown’s Early Day Films) drama proved a huge hit with critics and audiences alike.

4. The Favourite

Easily overlooked in year-end round-ups (it was released on January 1), Yorgos Lanthimos’s period black comedy boasted an Oscar winning performance by the great Olivia Colman and was a rare costume drama for people who don’t like costume dramas.

5. Us

It was another strong year for classy, imaginative horror, from Midsommar to One Cut of the Dead, but Jordan Peele’s creepy, racially charged Us was the pick of the crop, proving that his equally brilliant Get Out was no fluke.
