‘I’m just like an angel’: Helen Bauer prepares to take Bristol Comedy Garden by storm
Self described “comedy powerhouse” Helen Bauer continues to amass TV, radio and writing credits, and performs regularly in Australia, the UK, and all around Europe.
She is touring her show Bless Her to Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney in March and April, and will be appearing in Taskmaster winner Sam Campbell’s forthcoming scripted comedy series for Channel 4, Make that Movie!, set for release later in the year.
At Bristol Comedy Garden – which is celebrating 15 years in 2026 – Bauer will be featuring in the Saturday night show along with Jack Dee, Josh Pugh and Jen Nolan, with Bristol’s own Jayde Adams on hosting duties for the evening.
The other seven shows taking place across the five-day event in Queen Square will play host to a clutch of comedy stars including Josh Widdicombe, Simon Amstell, Fern Brady, Bridget Christie, Chris McCausland, Nina Conti, John Robins, David O’Doherty, Lou Sanders, Rhys James, Rob Delaney, Sara Pascoe, Mark Watson and Amy Gledhill.

For those who haven’t experienced it before, how would you describe the comedy persona of ‘Helen Bauer’ on stage?
“I’m just like an angel, but not like a bad angel that tells women they are pregnant with a concept and she won’t remember the ‘sex’ because she was sleeping. More like an angel who makes people laugh and feel warm on the inside.”

What do you most enjoy about working internationally?
“The films on the aeroplane. It’s like going to a digital Blockbuster and no one cares if I rewind.
“Actually, the person in the seat in front of me will mind if I keep rewinding for sure because it’s so hard to get the screen to recognise that my finger is a finger when I hit rewind on the touch screen; then they are like ‘can you stop jabbing the back of my seat?’ and I am like ‘sir, I want to watch this scene again because I was daydreaming!’ Then I get into a sky fight and its filmed and someone uploads it and I go bad viral. FORGET IT. I do not enjoy working internationally.”
What can’t you let go of at the moment?
“I can’t let go of anything, and if you tell me to let go of it I then will not let go of that thought. I will not let go of you asking this question and will discuss it on stage at Bristol Comedy Garden.”
What else will you do differently when you’re performing in front of such a big crowd?
“I think the mic volume will get increased.”
