Up-and-coming British Indian Canadian comic Sameera Bhalotra Bowers visits Bristol
22-year-old Sameera Bhalotra Bowers is a British Indian Canadian comedian, writer and performer, bringing her standup hour What Is Going On? to the Alma Tavern & Theatre (now a fully air-conditioned space) on June 26.
Her mum, she says, was “ever so proud” when she graduated with an Economics degree from the University of Cambridge, where she was also a member of the Footlights. “Less so”, she admits, when she went to clown school – although the school in question was the acclaimed École Phillipe Gaulier, just south of Paris.
Bowers has many creative strings to her bow, making an award-winning short film, and taking part in a garlanded comedy play (Penelope Quadrangle) at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe. This year, she was also a finalist in the West End New Act of The Year standup competition.
Now, however, she surmises that she needs to find gainful employment. This new multimedia show is an exploration of her current position in life; a far cry from what her LinkedIn profile would have us believe (namely a “changemaker, global innovator and value-driven impact leader”), she contends that she is anything but on top of things.
Searching for clarity, she takes us through “psychic guidance”, as well as “the science of perfectly spherical cows”, and her rise as “the leader of an Indian tutoring empire” who ultimately “wants to make her grandma proud”.
And if all else fails? Bowers has plans to become “the first 22-year-old living in an old-age nursing home”.
