A new outlook: how one venue is shaking up Bristol’s club scene

By Ursula Billington  Friday Dec 19, 2025

Clubbing is having a moment in Bristol.

Motion didn’t lie down for long, announcing its reopening as Motion 2.0 in a new venue, while the scene has been bolstered by new players like the (albeit short-lived) Underground, Document and alfresco raves at Sawmills, and visits from a bunch of big names in electronic music coupled with the rise of daytime shows are drawing crowds of all ages onto the dancefloor.

Leading the charge is a former Ministry of Defence torpedo warehouse in St Philip’s that has rapidly built a name for itself with an enviable programme of sell-out shows.

“The USP of the space is the scale and the industrial feel,” says marketing manager Ollie, referring to the Prospect Building’s 3,000 capacity main room, which, they believe, is the city’s biggest live music space and has put Bristol on the tour map, so major acts like the Last Dinner Party and Kneecap are tempted to stop by.

The venue’s wraparound nature also helps set them apart.

The courtyard’s stretch tents serving local beers and street food mean gig-goers can turn their ticket into a day-to-night experience, while collaborations with cultural organisations like Team Love and the Blast encourage an immersive use of the space.

“It’s more like a festival offering,” says general manager Hope.

“Nothing’s off the table at Prospect when it comes to ideas, curation and creativity, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in a venue.

“It’s not just about going out and getting wrecked now – I mean, people still want to obviously! – but it’s about creating an experience, a whole curated day, bringing art, production and food into it.”

The number of bodies in the room at their events speaks for itself, but the team is more interested in who those people are.

Offering a range of shows, from day raves to d’n’b all-nighters, live acts across pop, rock and indie, and big DJ names like Fatboy Slim and Joy Orbison means they’ve seen their audience diversify.

Diary manager Sam says he’s noticed an increase in older crowds, possibly drawn to an atmosphere that feels more inclusive than a typical club space, while the venue’s live shows are 14+, meaning they also welcome more younger people.

“I’ve noticed a real diversity of ages here,” agrees Ollie.

“The Annie Mac show was a completely different audience to some of the drum and bass shows or Boiler Room.

“They’re all very passionate about getting stuck in, being about the music, and being kind to each other.

“It’s a real buzz seeing communities that wouldn’t usually connect in a nightclub at 3am connecting here because it’s a day thing.”

“Bristol as a city has always been so music-led,” adds Hope. “Music runs through Bristol, so if you’re putting on a show that’s bringing all those people here, it’s going to be a really beautiful melting pot.”

Two consecutive nights in November served to demonstrate the true nature of a Bristol crowd.

The safety considerations for shows by Kneecap and Bob Vylan were “more extreme” than any other at the venue, but “it felt so unnecessary when we saw the crowd turn up,” says Sam.

“They were the nicest, quietest, loveliest crowd. Booking those shows in was a no-brainer, knowing the Bristol audience, and we’re really proud of how we delivered them.”

It was a moment, says Hope. “It’s Bristol, we’re a powerful city, we always stand up for our voices to be heard.

“It felt powerful being in the crowd; you could feel the energy.

“When you’re busy sitting behind spreadsheets or having all the meetings, sometimes you need to get yourself in the room and remember why we’re doing these things – to give people a space to be heard and celebrated.”

How will the Prospect Building top that in 2026?

“We keep going, we keep pushing!” says Hope.

“We just want to keep growing and giving the audience what they want in Bristol.

“We’ll continue to work with amazing artists in the space, doing things properly and giving those names the big shows they deserve.”
