Experimental printmaker Rosie Emerson exhibits at 17 Midland Road

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Sep 11, 2024

Following mid September’s exhibition from art-based activists Led By Donkeys, 17 Midland Road will present a solo show from contemporary British artist Rosie Emerson, who specialises in experimental printmaking.

Her work encompasses a range of techniques, from photopolymer etching and monoprint to cyanotype and hand-finished details.

Used in combination, Emerson creates unique and ethereal pieces that blend theatrical, historical and ecological elements.

When Other Worlds Whisper has been curated by Anna Smithson at Smithson Projects, who has chosen works that represent windows into “unseen worlds” at contrasting scales.

She cites a rich variety of Emerson’s inspirations, ranging from “the opulent grottos of extravagant aristocrats” to “the flamboyant embodiment of microscopic life, the mysterious communication patterns of coral, and the secret draws of ornate Victorian cabinets”.

Emerson will be in residence at 17 Midland Road during the week-long exhibition, providing visitors to her studio with an intriguing glimpse of the artist at work.

“Focusing on this solo show has given me the space and freedom to experiment with new materials and processes,” she reflects, “and to lose myself in research which allowed me to uncover the most magical hidden worlds.”

Rosie Emerson: When Other Worlds Whisper is at 17 Midland Road on September 20-26, from 11am-7pm daily. There is a Private View on September 19 from 6-9pm. Exhibition admission is free.
