New Bristol MP diagnosed with breast cancer

By Louis Emanuel  Monday Jun 22, 2015

Newly-elected Bristol West MP Thangam Debbonaire has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Labour MP, who was elected to office in May, said it is believed the cancer is “perfectly treatable” and promised to continue to represent her constituency.

“No matter how I’m feeling, I will ensure I represent and support the people of Bristol West effectively, with the help of a first-class constituency team,” she said.

Debbonaire, 48, was diagnosed on June 19 following a screening at Southmead Hospital and will now begin treatment at the BRI on July 3.

“My oncologist and surgeon both say the cancer is perfectly treatable and they expect me to make a full recovery,” she said.

She added: “I have also arranged back-up and support in parliament to cover policy and legislation updates.

“I want to emphasise that I picked up the signs of this disease because of public health awareness campaigns and I strongly encourage everyone to learn the early warning signs for cancer. In particular I’ve learnt how important it is for women to check their breasts regularly.”

Just last week the MP spoke passionately in the House of Commons against zero-hour contracts. She called on Bristol businesses to lead a clamp-down.
