Police appeal over giant tag in Avon Gorge

By Bristol24/7  Monday Aug 17, 2015

Could it be the biggest tag in Bristol? This man is being sought by police after he was caught on camera seemingly painting “Wes” on the cliffs of Avon Gorge.

The giant letters, which can be seen from the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Portway, appeared on June 8, according to the force.

The National Trust said graffiti artists have been breaking onto the property through Leigh Woods, trampling on rare “plants, insects, fungi and animals” in the process.

“A large number of these rare species, such as the Bristol rock cress, grow on the rock faces and in the quarries of the Avon Gorge. It’s for this reason that these areas are gated off to avoid trampling of these special plants,” said Victoria Stanfield, the National Trust’s area ranger for Leigh Woods,

Neighbourhood sergeant Mark Raby added: “The Avon Gorge is a conservation area and is not the place for graffiti or ‘tagging’. This is criminal damage which is having an impact on the community and the charity which manages the area.

“I’d ask anyone who can help us with information about those behind this to get in touch on 101.”
