Sorcerer

Director
William Friedkin
Certificate

Running Time
121 mins

Hot from The French Connection and The Exorcist, William Friedkin embarked upon this big-budget remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 flick The Wages of Fear, with Roy Scheider as one of a quartet charged with transporting a cargo of high explosives through the South American jungle. The knives were out for Friedkin after rumours emerged of a spiralling budget, and the film proved to be an unmitigated commercial and critical flop back in 1977.

But as so often with these things, Sorcerer has been rightly reassessed as a classic by a new generation, thanks in part to Scheider’s great performance and that brilliant Tangerine Dream score. Hence this welcome 40th anniversary reissue. It’s back on screen as part of the ‘shed’s March The Sound of Suspense Sunday brunch season. This, in turn, is part of Filmic 2018.
