Based on Joseph Kessel‘s novel, and drawing on his own experiences in the maquis, Jean-Pierre Melville‘s third film about the French Resistance is a truthful, tense, atmospheric and complex drama. The main strand follows Resistance fighter Philippe Gerbier (Lino Ventura), who’s arrested in Vichy France and handed over to the Gestapo. He then becomes determined to track down whoever betrayed him.

It’s back on screen in the ‘shed’s September Jean-Pierre Melville – An Independent Spirit Sunday brunch season, following on from the re-release of Le Doulos.
