Way back in 1945, when even Hayayo Miyazaki was a nipper, Japan produced its first feature-length anime. Momotaro – Sacred Sailors is a wartime propaganda flick aimed at encouraging yoof to sign up for the navy. This is a rare opportunity to see this curio, which was long thought lost and has now been restored from the sole surviving negative. Be warned, however, that it contains what the BBFC refers to delicately as “outdated racist attitudes” – demonstrating that the Japanese were just as capable of stereotyping their enemies as the Americans.
It’s on screen as part of the Watershed’s More Than Miyazaki Japanese anime season.
