Uni showcases green innovations during annual event
UWE Bristol has highlighted its role in shaping the region’s green economy during its Green Week, showcasing pioneering research, innovation and sustainability initiatives.
The event was held between November 3 to 7 at its Frenchay Campus.
The Green Week follows a major milestone for UWE Bristol as it became the first UK university to sign the Repair and Reuse Declaration as a whole institution – a national call for policymakers to make repair and reuse more affordable and to expand right to repair laws.
The move builds on the success of its Sustainability Hub and student-led Repair Cafe, which together have diverted more than 12 tonnes of items from landfill and engaged hundreds of volunteers in hands-on sustainability.

As part of the week, West of England mayor Helen Godwin visited UWE Bristol’s Frenchay campus to explore projects contributing to the region’s transition to a greener economy.
These included Curiosity Connections Green Futures, which introduces school pupils to green careers; sustainable transport research from the Centre for Transport and Society; and wellbeing-focused studies from the Centre for Sustainable Planning and Environments.
The mayor also met SLANT Mobility, a sustainable transport startup based at UWE’s Launch Space incubator, developing modular electric systems for low-emission urban deliveries.

Professor Steve West, vice-chancellor at UWE Bristol, said: “Green Week is an opportunity for our community to reflect on our shared responsibility for the environment and to see how our collective research, innovation and enterprise contribute to a greener future for the region.
“By combining research, enterprise and community action, we are seeing first-hand how universities can help create green jobs, tackle climate change and build a circular economy.”
Mayor Godwin added: “UWE Bristol plays such an important role in our region. Innovation here on campus by students and staff is creating new jobs and powering change for our region and for our planet.”
