Korean Billy’s guide to help new Bristol students feel at home

By Bristol24/7  Wednesday May 23, 2018

A viral internet sensation known for his popular British dialect tutorial videos has been hired by a student accommodation company based in Bristol to create a video with the aim of helping new students feel more at home in the city.

Korean Billy’s Guide to Bristol includes Bristol quirks, sayings, landmarks and cuisine – with stop-offs at locations including Park Street, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Pieminister and even Jason Donervan on Clifton Triangle.

The video was made by Korean Billy in partnership with Unite Students, who have also made videos for students moving to London, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Founded in Bristol in 1991, Unite Students is the UK’s largest purpose-built student accommodation provider of its kind. More than a third of its 50,000 occupants are overseas students.

John Blanshard, student experience director at Unite Students, said: “Korean Billy is a sensation not just in Britain but across the globe and that’s why we think he’s the perfect person to help us launch our guide.

“The guides we’ve created should help people understand a bit more about where they are heading to, in an engaging way.”

Korean Billy, whose real name is Seong-Jae Kong and lives in Seoul, added: “When Unite Students approached me I knew that it was something I wanted to help with. I love British culture and I’ve only ever heard good things about Bristol, that’s why now several of my videos focus on Bristol’s dialect and quirks.

“I know what it’s like for students travelling to another city or even country for their education, so if these video guides help at least one student feel more at home then I’ll be happy!”
