Not a happy hundredth appearance for Harry Randall

By Martin Booth  Friday Apr 14, 2023

When Semi Radradra was recently asked to name the most skilful player at Bristol Bears, his answer was Andy Uren.

Like most of this season (his last for his boyhood club before moving to Benetton), the Bristol-born scrum-half was on the sidelines for this most of this match against Sale Sharks.

Pat Lam’s preferred choice at number 9, Harry Randall, took to the field on his own to mark his 100th appearance for Bristol, with Uren a spectator until the last ten minutes.

It wasn’t a happy hundred for Harry as Bristol were beaten 20-36.

By his high standards, Randall had a quiet Friday evening, in a match where he was also co-captain alongside Steven Luatua.

But spare a thought for Uren, whose Radradra-approved skills were only on show on the pitch when Bristol were already trailing by 36 points to 13.

He made an almost immediate impact, however, taking a quick penalty and then helping to pass the ball wide for a try scored by Gabriel Ibitoye.

Uren made as much a nuisance of himself as possible but he wants to start matches, not make ten-minute cameos.

Bristol’s loss will be Benetton’s gain next season, as Uren’s skills will be showcased in Italy with Randall continuing to lead Bristol from the front as they hope to put this disappointing season behind them.
