Black Ferns star Ruahei Demant to join Bristol Bears
Ruahei Demant will become a Bristol Bears player at the end of November.
The Black Ferns star and former World Player of the Year will join the Bears’ women’s team as part of a four-month deal, which will include playing in the Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR).
Demant said: “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to represent Bristol Bears in a world-leading competition like the PWR. I can’t wait to meet the girls, the management and the fans, all while growing as a person and a player.”

The 30-year-old debuted as part of New Zealand’s national women’s team in 2018. She is one of only three players to have won 50 caps for the Black Ferns, scoring 130 points for her country.
She was also part of Black Ferns’ squad for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, and competed against Canada in the semi-final match held at Ashton Gate.

“Ruahei is a genuinely world-class player,” said Bears’ head coach Scott Lawson. “Her vision, leadership and ability to influence games at the highest level set her apart, and we can’t wait to welcome her into our group.”
Lawson continued: “You don’t become World Player of the Year without being something truly special, and her experience with the Black Ferns will bring immense value to our environment both on and off the pitch.
“With the injuries we’re managing to key playmakers like Phoebe Murray and Meryl Smith, Ruahei’s arrival couldn’t be more important.
“She brings not just quality and composure in the backline, but also the kind of presence and professionalism that lifts everyone around her.
“We’re excited to see the impact she’ll have in a Bears shirt.”
Demant is expected to arrive ahead of the Bears’ match against three-time reigning champions Gloucester-Hartpury on November 30th.
For her team in New Zealand, Demant said: “I’m extremely grateful New Zealand Rugby have allowed me to explore this opportunity and will return refreshed and ready for the Pacific Four Series (PAC4) 2025 in April 2026.”
