Judd Trump wins first World Championship title

By Martin Booth  Monday May 6, 2019

Judd Trump played some of the best snooker of his career as he beat John Higgins 18-9 to win his first World Championship.

The Bristol-born left-hander, who grew up in Whitchurch, took home the trophy and a cheque for £500,000, making him the first player to amass more than £1m in a single season.

He also became just the 11th man in history to win snooker’s triple crown, having already won the UK Championships and the Masters.

Among the crowd on Monday evening at the world famous Crucible Theatre to watch Trump make history was fellow 29-year-old, Sheffield lord mayor Magid Magid.

Trump won eight frames in a row on Sunday night.and only needed two frames in the final session, having scored the World Championship’s hundredth 100 earlier on Monday in a valiant attempt at a maximum break.

“I gave it everything but he was unplayable,” said Higgins after the match.

“He’s now the complete player,” said former world champion Dennis Taylor during commentary.

Talking to BBC Sport’s Hazel Irvine, Trump said: “I have worked so hard for this, for people around me is so special. It was an amazing final, the standard from the very first ball.

“I always raise my standard against John and still don’t beat him. That is probably the best I have ever played in a major final.”
