Mountain bike festival to debut this summer
A new mountain bike festival is taking place in Ashton Court this summer, seeking to bring together mountain bikers of all levels.
The mini festival will happen on July 11 and general admission is free, though paid-for tickets are required for people wanting to participate in riding activities.
Bristol Shredfest is a collaboration between Ride Bristol, a volunteer group which protects mountain bike trails in the city, and Bristol Shredders, an organisation which organises rides for kids and their parents.
Funds raised will support the work of the two organisations, helping efforts to improve and maintain Bristol’s trail network as well as encouraging young people of all backgrounds to try mountain biking.
The festival creators hope to lower barriers to getting into the sport by ensuring that those without a bike can still experience mountain biking. Bike hire will be available from Pedal Progression and there is an introductory guide available.
Planned events involve the Shredfast classic, a 35km mountain bike ride around Bristol; the Shredfest Triple Crown, a three-stage timed event around Ashton Court; and the Kid’s Shredquest Challenge, which will send younger bikers off to search for checkpoints and complete challenges.
The festival will also have food and drinks from local vendors, a licensed bar, demo bikes, free Avon and Somerset Police bike marking, exhibitor stands and a large fundraising raffle with prizes from across the cycling and outdoor industries.
Fi Wilson, co-founder of Shredders and a Ride Bristol Trustee, said: “We wanted to create an event that captures everything that’s great about Bristol’s mountain biking community.
“Mountain biking should be fun, welcoming and accessible. Whether you’re trying it for the first time, riding with your kids, chasing your mates around a course, or just looking for a great day outdoors, Bristol Shredfest is all about taking part your way.
“Expect a bit of friendly competition, a bit of silliness, and a lot of people having a very good time on bikes!”
