Bristol ultimate frisbee team win silver in youth championships
An ultimate frisbee team in Bristol won several accolades at a national championships.
Bristol Geese, a club for young people aged nine to 14, started in 2023 and is based in south Bristol – usually training in Ashton Park Sports Centre or Greville Smyth Park.
The team came second in the Under-14 division at the UK Ultimate Youth Outdoor Nationals in Birmingham.
Bristol Geese lost 6-5 in the final against reigning champions Epsom after winning their first four games, including a huge 13-0 margin against Solihull.
The team also were rated ‘spirit winner’ by their opponents, having been judges on fairness, communication and respect.
This additional award suggests the importance of sportsmanship in ultimate frisbee, which is self-refereed at the youth level.
Bristol Geese Under-17 Women secured an impressive fifth place in their division, with a 5-4 win over Croydon’s Lloyd Park after progressing from the pool stage.
Bristol Geese head coach, Dave Sealy, said: “These results are a real testament to the hard work of the entire Bristol Geese team.
“To see their commitment to the game of ultimate frisbee – which is growing in popularity in the UK – pay off in this way is fantastic, and it’s great to see how far the team has come in such a short space of time.
“To be crowned Spirit of the Game winners for another year underlines the ultimate frisbee culture we’re fostering here in Bristol – one of fair play, inclusivity, but above all, enjoyment.
“We are so proud of all our players, and grateful to our volunteer coaches and parents for their support in getting the team to where it is today.”
